Generally, misfortune is man’s inhumanity to man. Interesting parallels between dustbowl America (thank you, Steinbeck) and Africa can be made. Look at what is happening right now in Niger with the drought or well, take your pick of countries. I think the point you are trying to make is that we are all connected. There’s a verse in Genesis and then again in Job that talks about the breath of God giving us life. We all come from the same source. Therefore, I find we are obligated to take care of each other like brothers and sisters. The division between the poor and the privileged always produces suffering, but how do you get people to change and realize that we are all connected?
